Christmas warning for road safety campaigners as one million motorists admit they drink drive every week

The survey revealed that 41 per cent of motorists believe they are legally allowed them to drink 2 units of alcohol, with 9 per cent believing 4 units are allowed. In fact, official Government advice is to avoid all booze.

The legal drink drive limit is 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood or 35mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Robert Goodwill, road safety minister, said: "Most people know that drinking and driving is wrong and don't do it, but sadly there are some who still do.

"Anyone tempted to have a tipple at Christmas time before climbing behind the wheel should know they face some very serious consequences.

"Not only will you lose your licence but, if you rely on your car for work, you will potentially lose your job or wreck your chance of future employment."

Coca-Cola said 33 per of those who drink drive do so because they feel sober while 24 per cent claim they are only travelling a short distance.
