Female electrician

Just 7 per cent of male respondents said they would not trust a female electrician, compared to 12 per cent overall. This suggests there is a greater bias by women against other women doing jobs traditionally associated with men.

Female pilot

Only 8 per cent of men surveyed said they would distrust a female pilot.

However, a small number said they would change their flight or complain if they found out they had a female pilot.

Female mechanic

Six per cent of men said they were sceptical of female mechanics. 'But more women were sceptical, with 11 per cent saying they would not trust a woman to be a mechanic. Again, this suggests women receive bias about the types of roles they do for a living from both genders.

Male primary schoolteacher

A small number of men (4pc) said they would not trust a male teacher at primary school, compared to 5 per cent of women. This profession is dominated by women at present, with people believing women are just "better" teachers than men, the survey found.

Female surgeon

There are double the number of women (6 per cent) than men (3 per cent) who say they would distrust a female surgeon. Four in 10 Brits overall think men would be "better" surgeons than women. Their responses reveal a "worrying degree of sexism", according to the poll.

Male nurse

Only 3 per cent of men would distrust a male nurse, compared to 5 per cent of women. Other survey findings show that men still see women as more caring (42 per cent), compassionate (38 per cent) and empathetic (29 per cent) - "character traits that are arguable closer to careers of nurse or a nanny than a soldier or security guard," the study suggests.

Female bus driver

Just 2 per cent of men would distrust a female bus driver, compared to 5 per cent of women. The popular myth that men can drive better than women could be behind these survey findings.

Overall, the survey found almost two thirds of men and women trust all of the above professionals.
