He said that there were rather too many portly bellies seen around the halls of Westminster and that measuring thier waistline and against their height was a simple way to check whether they were a healthy size.
"At the end of the day you cannot be obese unless you are eating too much – and it looks bad if MPs are telling people what to do and are obese themselves.
"It is an important issue and we notice quite a bit of obesity in the ranks and, they are eating too much of the gross national product. .
"It is killing millions of people, its costing billions and the cost is free – eat less and eat more healthily. I hereby empower people – all they have to do is put less food in their mouths."
This week the National Obesity Forum warned that Britain's obesity crisis could be worse that feared with a report suggesting that predictions that half the British population will be obese by 2050 ''underestimate'' the scale of the crisis.
In the same debate Lord Tebbit blamed people's "own stupid actions" in eating "rubbish" foods for the rise in obesity. The former Conservative Cabinet minister lashed out at those who "stuff themselves silly" at question time in the Lords.
He told peers: "People ought to know that if they stuff themselves silly with high calorie rubbish foods they will get fat."
"It's their responsibility and all the forums and other nonsenses are merely trying to divorce people from the consequences of their own stupid actions."
