Best movies: the best new films on release in cinemas this week
ROBOCOP (12A cert, 118 min)

Dir: José Padilha; Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Jennifer Ehle, Jay Baruchel
This remake of the 1987 original chugs along fine, but it is not only unchallenging, it seems actively scared of challenging us. You emerge feeling pacified and only semi-entertained. Read The Telegraph's Robocop review.
THE INVISIBLE WOMAN (12 cert, 111 min)

Dir: Ralph Fiennes; Starring: Felicity Jones, Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas, Joanna Scanlan, Tom Hollander, Tom Burke
This story about Nelly Ternan's affair with Charles Dickens is fluid, handsome and confidently contained. Read The Telegraph's The Invisible Woman review.
THE LEGO MOVIE (U cery, 100 min)

The new animation from Warner Bros. takes art and commerce and clicks them together as naturally and satisfyingly as a pair of plastic bricks on their way to becoming a castle or spaceship. Read The Telegraph's The Lego Movie review.
MR PEABODY & SHERMAN (U cert, 91 mins)

Dir: Rob Minkoff; Starring: Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Ariel Winter, Stephen Colbert, Leslie Mann, Allison Janney, Patrick Warburton, Stanley Tucci, Lake Bell
This film is sweet-natured and amusing, with a story to captivate kids; yet the script has enough witty touches to keep adults laughing too. Read The Telegraph's Mr Peabody & Sherman review.
LIFT TO THE SCAFFOLD (PG cert, 92 min)

Dir: Louis Malle; Starring: Jeanne Moreau, Maurice Ronet, Georges Poujouly, Lino Ventura, Yori Bertin, Jean Wall
Few debuts come punchier, cooler, and more influential than Louis Malle's 1958 thriller about a Parisian murder plan unravelling, scene by fateful scene. Read The Telegraph's Lift to the Scaffold review.
