Four eyes good for David Cameron
The five stages of grief are said to be denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. In making his first public appearance in glasses – explaining that he has worn them in private since June – David Cameron implies that he has been on a journey familiar to anyone over the age of about 45. First comes holding one's book or newspaper at arm's length under the brightest available light. Then it becomes clear that assistance is needed – but only occasionally, for fear of becoming spectacle-dependent. That is followed by the weary realisation that glasses must be carried at all times. Finally, there is acceptance – and an appearance before the Commons. The Prime Minister has nothing to be embarrassed about; indeed, while it is good to set an example of thrift, he should feel able to spend more than £15 on his vital new accessories.
